SPEAKER FROM NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES – January 30

January 30, 2018

Join us at the January 30 Kensington Historical Society meeting, Town Hall – 7 p.m. for coffee, cookies and conversation.  Meeting and speaker follow at 7:30 p.m. Learn about the importance of the Historic District in our community!

What is the National Register of Historic Places and why should you know about it? The Kensington Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980! It was placed under the protection of the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation in 1986.

We welcome Paul Loether, National Register Chief and Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places as our speaker.  Mr. Loether will describe what the National Register is; why it was created; what it does and does not do (including common misconceptions); and provide some interesting/unusual examples of a range of property types listed or determined eligible for listing on the Register. His talk will be enhanced with powerpoint slides. Question and answer session will follow.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.
