Yours, Mine and Ours: A Homeowner’s Guide to the Kensington Historic District

January 14, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Program description for January 14, 2020
7:00 pm – 7:30 pm: Refreshments
7:30 pm – 8:30 pm: Panel discussion, followed by Q & A

Back by popular demand…

Please join the Kensington Historical Society (KHS) for a special program for all property owners in the Town’s Historic District as well as for all who are interested in understanding the significance of the town’s history and how to preserve it.  Many people contact the KHS with questions about the whys and wherefores of renovating or adding on to a house or doing other work within the Historic District.  While we can provide some limited information, the KHS actually has no official role in approving such work, which is the purview of the Montgomery County Planning Department’s Historic Preservation Division and the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). We’ve assembled a panel of experts who can answer your questions; explain what is involved in applying for a Montgomery County Historic Area Work Permit (HAWP) and when it is required; and how tax credits can substantially reduce the cost of maintaining a historic district property, whether the building is considered historically significant or not. Helpful handout materials will be available for takeaway.

Panelists:

  • Rebeccah Ballo, Supervisor, Historic Preservation Division, Montgomery County Planning
  • Michael Kyne, Planner Coordinator/Tax Credit Program Manager, Historic Preservation Division, Montgomery County Planning
  • Sandra Heiler, Chair, Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC)
  • Moderator: Helen Wilkes, Chair, Kensington Local Advisory Panel (LAP – Advisory to the HPC)
